5317 Audio and Visual Digital Tools

The videos from the class were insightful this week. I enjoyed watching the educators discuss innovative digital learning environments in their schools and how they increase rigor and creativity with their students (Innovative Digital Learning Environments, 2015). I agree with the video opinions that incorporating digital into learning environments provides a much larger audience for your work and a way to interact and receive immediate feedback from your peers (Innovative Digital Learning Environments, 2015). I have found the same to be true in the online teaching environment.

I was excited to see the video by Sal Khan, creator of the Khan Academy. I have been impressed in recent years with my children in high school how much they have benefitted from the Khan academy programs that are attached to exams like the SAT. The pinpointed study guides and support have been wonderful for them. My son’s teachers have also used it in math classes to use the same approach he discusses in the video of allowing them to watch videos at home and then participate in homework in class. This was a big addition to their virtual classrooms during the height of the pandemic. Sal Kahn (n.d.) gave a great reminder that when “using technology, not just flipping the classroom, you’re humanizing the classroom”.

So far in this program, I have used Canva, Powerpoint, and google slides to create presentations. I have used Zoom and ScreenCastify in the past for screencasting and recording with audio. For presentations in the past, I have usually stuck with PowerPoint or google slides. Trying out new programs in ADL has been fun. I really enjoy using Canva. I have enjoyed the variety of templates and features that are provided with the educator version. It makes creating engaging presentations not only easy but enjoyable! I would consider any other program and would love to try some of them out in the future. I want to investigate Pear Deck as I have seen a few presentations created by Karin Stateler that were great, and she shared it was what she used. I look forward to researching new tools and trying them out with future assignments.
